英語表現の学び（２）

英語表現の2回目です。

今回は、日常的にはあまり「見かけない」ものの、Business Scene ではよく使われる用語なども取り上げています。

● plateau

一般には、Decan Plateau （デカン高原：インド）のように、地理的な意味の「高原」として使われますが、ビジネスにおいては、「停滞期」や「安定期」といった意味でしばしば使われます。

（例文）
After significant growth in the previous quarters, the company’s revenue reached a plateau.

● exploit

“use”と似た意味を持つ単語ですが、「搾取する」、「不当に使う」というようなネガティブなニュアンスがあるので、一般的にはあまり使われないと思ますが、ビジネス用語としては頻出です。
”take advantage of” も同じような意味でよく使われます。

（例文）
The company tried to exploit（＝take advantage of) emerging market trends by launching innovative products to gain a competitive advantage.

● in theory…，but in reality…

「理論的には…だが、実際には･･･だ」という意味を表す便利な表現です。

（例文）
In theory, our cost-saving tactics should lead to increased profitability, but in reality, operational inefficiencies and unexpected expenses have offset the projected savings.
