People around the world are talking about how to protect children from the dangers of social media. Recently, Australia decided to ban young teenagers from using SNS. Now, Japan is also taking action. In June 2026, the government started planning a new law to make strict age verification mandatory for SNS companies.

Until now, age verification in Japan was very simple. Users just put in their birth date by themselves. This meant children could easily disguise their real age and create accounts. However, many people now worry that this does not protect children enough.Children face real risks on SNS, such as cyberbullying, crime, and mental health issues caused by using apps for too long.

Japan’s new approach is a little different from other countries. For example, countries like Australia want to completely ban SNS for anyone under 16. On the other hand, Japan does not intend to introduce a full ban. Instead, the government wants SNS companies to change their features based on the user’s age.

However, there is still a big question: how can companies check a user’s true age? One idea is to use official ID cards or smartphone contract data. But some people worry about losing their private information.

The government aims to bring this new law to parliament in 2027. Japan is now trying to find the best balance between digital convenience and safety for children.
