More Than a Certificate: The Real Value of Studying

Right now, I’m publishing a series of videos covering labor-related laws and regulations for the SME (Small and Medium Enterprise Management Consultant) exam. This topic is surprisingly broad — it covers everything from the Labor Standards Act to employment rules, social insurance, and beyond.

This work takes me back to several years ago when I was studying for the Social Insurance and Labor Consultant(the Shakai Hoken Rōmushi) exam.

Honestly, the studying itself was really enjoyable.  Learning about labor law, employee benefits, and the social insurance system — all of that really fascinated me.

However, once I started practicing past exam questions, and reality hit me. The exam required me to memorize an enormous volume of very specific numbers, dates, and legal thresholds.

Memorization isn’t really my strength.  My strengths are in quantitative analysis and interpretation, rather than the procedural sides of law. After working through several past papers, I came to a pretty clear conclusion: This exam is simply not the right fit for me.

So I let it go. But here’s what I want to say: that time was absolutely not wasted. The knowledge I gained from studying for that exam has been directly useful in my work, in understanding business operations, and now in creating these Shindanshi exam videos. I understand labor law far better than I would have otherwise.

We don’t always need to pass a test — or even sit for one — to get real value from studying for it. Sometimes the learning itself is the whole point. The certificate is just one possible outcome, not the only one worth chasing.
