The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has established a new rule requiring that consumers must be able to cancel their subscriptions to products and services with a single click.

This rule targets companies that intentionally complicate the cancellation process , deliberately obstructing consumers from unsubscribing. Additionally, the FTC has indicated that companies failing to implement easy cancellation methods may face penalties.

The FTC will also regulate the sale of products and services through “negative option” marketing. A negative option refers to a system in which consumers who sign up for a free trial are automatically charged unless they cancel within a certain period.

The FTC has been pursuing large companies such as Adobe and Amazon, accusing them of using complicated systems to prevent consumers from easily canceling subscriptions.

With the introduction of this “one-click cancellation” rule, there is hope for more fairness in commercial transactions.
