The recent surge in foreign tourists visiting Japan has brought a mix of both promising benefits and challenging drawbacks.

The increase in visitors brings economic benefits, helps revive local communities, and promotes international understanding of Japanese culture. However, it has also led to problems like noise, traffic jams, more waste, and issues with visitor behavior.

For example, popular tourist spots, such as Tokyo and Kyoto, often experience high levels of congestion, which can disrupt the daily lives of residents. Overcrowded streets and public transportation systems result in noise and inconvenience for both locals and visitors.

Waste and environmental damage are also problems caused by too many tourists. Littering and improper disposal harm the cleanliness and natural beauty of tourist spots, impacting the environment and making the experience worse for future visitors.

In my view, Japan must now balance the benefits of tourism with protecting local communities and natural sites.

Of course, it’s easier said than done.

However, with a concerted effort among government agencies, communities, and the tourism industry, I believe Japan can achieve a harmonious balance between welcoming foreign guests and preserving the peace and beauty of its cultural sites.
