今回は「私と英語との関わり」の2回目です。
社会人になると、同僚や先輩の中には自主的に英語を学んでいる人もいました。しかし、どちらかと言えば少数派だったと思います。
私自身、ある種の英語に対する負い目というか、心の奥に「英語は勉強しておいた方が良い」という思いはありました。
社会人になりたての頃、強引なセールスを断りきれずに、高価な英語教材を購入したこともありました。結局ほとんど利用することなく（劣化したので）処分しましたが。
また、英語のテキストが書店に並ぶ今頃の時期（３月～４月頃）になると、英語のテキストを買ったりしました。結局、1週間も経たないうちに挫折するのですが。
ただ、今となっては幸いなことに（当時は苦痛でしたが…）その後転職した会社で、英語を使う仕事も時々ありました。英文のドキュメンテーションや海外出張も何度か経験しましたが、その都度、自分の英語力の無さをつくづく思い知らされました。
海外出張では、現地法人における管理システムの構築や現地での定着支援を行ったり、あるいは、現地法人の経営管理者の採用面接に立ち会い、候補者の専門性等の評価を行うようなこともありました。
しかし、私の英語力では到底的確に英語で表現することはできなかったので、常に通訳を通じて行っていました。
また、現地で予期せぬ事態が発生し、緊急会議が開かれたことがありました。その時は、運悪く通訳がいなかったので、（内容もほとんど把握できずに）まさにお手上げ状態でした。
結局、いかに高いビジネスのスキルがあっても、伝達する手段（英語）が貧弱だと、結果的に低いパフォーマンス（あるいは評価）しか得られないことを痛感しました。
また、英語ネイティブではない欧州人（フランス人やドイツ人）が非常に流暢に英語を駆使したり、あるいはアジア圏でもシンガポール人や香港人の流暢な英語に触れる中で、｢（英語は特に必要ないと考えていた）自分の考えは間違っていた」と認識するに至りました。
このように、英語を身につける必要性を痛切に感じたのは、社会人になって大分経過した後のことでした。
【Summary】
Upon starting work, I noticed some coworkers and seniors dedicating themselves to studying English.
Looking back to when I was a new employee, I ended up purchasing expensive English learning materials due to a strong sales pitch.
Furthermore, around this time of year (March to April), I would also find myself buying English textbooks, only to give them up within a week or so.
After several years in the workforce, I decided to transition to a new job at a strategic consulting firm.
As a consultant, I used to assist in the development and implementation of management systems, now referred to as ‘Internal Control’.
We had overseas clients, so we provided similar or ocassionally broader services to them as we did in Japan.
In terms of “broader services”, I had participated in job interviews for managerial positions at local businesses, assessing candidates’ expertise.
Though it was a very exciting job, due to my limited English proficiency, I always relied on interpreters to facilitate communication.
At one time, an unexpected situation, like drawing a curveball, occurred at the local subsidiary, prompting an emergency meeting.
Unfortunately, there was no interpreter available at the meeting, and my lack of proficiency in English left me feeling powerless.
In a nutshell, no matter how high my business skills were, only low performance could be achieved due to my weak English skills.
Furthermore, I came to realize that individuals from various backgrounds, such as French or German, as well as those from Asian countries like Singapore or Hong Kong, were extremely fluent in English.
This realization led me to understand that my previous belief, that English wasn’t particularly necessary, was incorrect.
